Quitting isn’t always easy — and it rarely looks the same for everyone.

Toka’s story shows what can happen when you find support that fits your real life, even after years of smoking.

At the Manitoba Lung Association and through our ManitobaQuits program, we are honored to celebrate incredible stories of resilience and determination, like Toka’s. Over 10 years ago, Toka made the life-changing decision to quit smoking, and her journey is one of inspiration and hope for those looking to follow in her footsteps.

Back then, Toka smoked about half a pack of cigarettes a day—down from the pack-a-day habit she’d had for years. Her health was starting to show the strain. Nights were interrupted by constant coughing, and her energy levels were low. These symptoms, along with the growing financial burden of smoking, became the wake-up call she needed. With her first granddaughter recently born, Toka wanted to be present and healthy for her family. That’s when she decided to quit.

Finding What Works
Quitting wasn’t easy, and Toka didn’t find the right tools right away. She started with nicotine patches, but the side effects made her feel sick. Adjusting the dosage by cutting the patches in half helped, but she eventually turned to nicotine gum. Learning how to use it correctly made a big difference, and it became a key tool in her journey. Toka also tried other methods, like medication, but found it wasn’t the right fit for her.

In those early days, she leaned on rest, took long naps to get through cravings, and informed her family about her quit plan. This helped her manage the emotional ups and downs that often come with quitting.

The Rewards of Quitting
The benefits of quitting started showing up quickly. Within just a week, her nighttime coughing disappeared, bringing her much-needed relief. Financially, quitting allowed Toka to save money and treat herself to little rewards—a habit she continues today. Health-wise, she noticed improvements in her energy and quality of life, and being around her grandchildren became even more joyful.

Giving Back to the Community
Toka’s journey didn’t stop at quitting. She joined the ManitobaQuits Facebook support group, where she now encourages others on their own quit journeys. Toka shares her experiences and tips, reminding participants that they’re not alone in facing the challenges of quitting. “I like reading people’s stories,” she says. “It’s inspiring to see others trying their best to quit, and I try to support them however I can.”

Toka’s involvement with ManitobaQuits has extended beyond the digital space. A few years ago, she joined a walk hosted by the Manitoba Lung Association, bringing her granddaughter along. For her, it was a chance to celebrate her progress and connect with others in the community.

Today, Toka works as a healthcare aide and is a proud grandmother to three grandchildren. She remains smoke-free and continues to be a shining example of how quitting nicotine can transform your life.

At ManitobaQuits, we’re grateful to have Toka as part of our community and as a source of inspiration for others. If you’re considering quitting, know that support is available, and people like Toka are here to cheer you on every step of the way.

Let Toka’s story be a reminder: it’s never too late to make a change that benefits your health, your family, and your future.

If Toka’s story resonates with you, support is available through ManitobaQuits.
