Bye Bye Beaters
Since November 2003 when the program first began in Manitoba, Bye Bye Beaters has scrapped over 1000 light duty vehicles and has prevented the net release of:
- 315 tonnes of carbon monoxide (CO)¹
- 47 tonnes of smog-forming emission (VOCs & NOx)¹
- 1295 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e)² ³
New for 2009, Bye Bye Beaters is pleased to be part of the Retire Your Ride national vehicle scrappage program as the Manitoban deliver partner. Please visit www.retireyourride.ca or www.adieubazou.ca for more information on this Canada-wide program.
It's no surprise that a key source of air pollution is vehicle emissions. These emissions contribute to smog and climate change, and have a negative effect on people's health. What few people realize is that vehicles that are 1995 or older contribute significantly more pollution as they pre-date more stringent vehicle emission standards.
Each vehicle recycled through Bye Bye Beaters and Retire Your Ride partners across Canada translates into a reduction of 54 kg of smog-forming emissions. Vehicles 1995 or older emit 19 times more smog forming emissions that vehicle models 2004 or newer.
While getting your older vehicle off the road helps clear the air, salvaged parts, fluids and recycled metal from the hundreds of tonnes of recycled vehicles annually produces substantial environmental benefits from reduced environmental releases and resource reuse.
You can help! The Lung Association, Manitoba's Bye Bye Beaters program is offering incentives to owners of vehicles, 1995 or older, to contribute their beaters to this effort. Winnipeg City Councillor Mark Lubosch sent his beloved Jetta on its final journey - to the automobile recycling program - for the cause.
If you and your vehicle meet the qualification criteria and you make the decision to participate in this program, you may choose from several incentive options when you say Bye Bye to your Beater.
¹ based on a detailed Emission Factors study of the 970 vehicles scrapped total assuming all vehicles were replaced with newer vehicles from November 2003 to December 31st 2008 for the Bye Bye Beaters Vehicle Scrappage Program, using the Emission Factors 2005-Light Duty Vehicles, Environment Canada Table.
² the CO2 study estimates that the scrapped vehicle and replacement vehicle are both driven 20,000 km per year.
³ CO2e includes the global warming potential of N2O, CH4 and CO2 emissions. |
